Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands and is characterised by the strong contrasts and the great variety of the landscapes and the beaches which are able to satisfy every taste and preference. It is mostly a green island, with more sparse vegetation in its southern part.
Kefalonia’s Ports
The island can be reached by boat in one of its 4 ports: Poros, Sami, Lixouri and Argostoli. Ferries depart from Patras or Kyllini.
Kefalonia’s ports, Sami and Poros, are connected by boat with the port of Patra and the port of Kyllini daily. The ferry trip from Kyllini to the port of Poros takes 2 hours. There is also a ship itinerary from Kyllini to Argostoli but it is for limited and specific days of the week. From the port of Astakos there are itineraries to the port of Sami with this journey lasting 3.5 hours. By bus, visitors can be transported from Athens to the 2 ports of the Peloponnese and from there they can choose their destination to the island.
Kefalonia’s Airport
The island’s airport is located just outside Argostoli, accepting regular flights and charter flights from El. Venizelos. The flight lasts 1 hour.
Kefalonia’s Transportations – Car Rental
Travel within the island is varied. It is recommended to rent a car as this ensures flexibility and better time scheduling. Especially for those who do not wish to bring their means of transport to the island, renting is a solution.
Given the size of the island and the distances the best choice of traveling around is by road. The road network is mapped which makes the use of navigation applications a breeze. But you need to be careful since in many places the roads are narrow with sharp turns.
For those who do not have their personal vehicle, there is always the option of using the local bus (KTEL), whose facilities are placed in the centre of Argostoli, of Sami, of Lixouri and of Poros. Taxi is also an option for transportation, especially for short distances or around the city. You can also use local ferry boats as an alternative to the road network, but you have to check the available itineraries.
